Almonds and Raisins: The History of the Yiddish Cinema Film Screening Hosted by: The Florence Melton Adult Mini School
Join us for the first-ever Portland screening of the acclaimed documentary Almonds and Raisins: A History of the Yiddish Cinema. Ranked by film critic Kathryn Bernheimer as one of the top 15 Jewish films of all time, Almonds and Raisins explores the many Yiddish-language films made in the United States and Europe between the release of The Jazz Singer in 1927 and the outbreak of World War Two. The screening will include an introduction to the film by David Fuks, a Yiddish sing-along with local singer/songwriter Amy Shapiro and a talkback after the film with Professor Robert Liebman, the founder of Judaic studies at PSU. Come, learn a bit about Yiddish culture, and experience this exciting, irreplaceable period of filmmaking!
